Tips for Saving Time and Money

Order roses from mail order catalogs or over the Internet. Some of these roses are from the same suppliers that sell to nurseries, who in turn mark them up about 100%. Order early: popular varieties run out quickly.
Measure twice, order once: make sure the rose bush, at its mature size, will fit in the space where you want to plant it. Consider that shrubs around it may grow, too.
Think Twice about Gift Cards Gift cards are an easy gift—too easy, says Mary Hunt in the November 2004 issue of Cheapskate Monthly. "Millions of gift cards are never redeemed. But do you think millions of $20 bills suddenly go missing?" But they’re good for mailing, right? "Gift Cards are stolen [out of the mail] all the time ... Give a gift card because that is at the top of your recipient’s wish list, not because it’s an easy default for you." Considering how many rose growers say that they don’t have room for another rose, or will plant one only if it comes with a hole, it makes sense to find out if the beneficiary wants a nursery gift card.
