Find your Favorite Fragrant Plant

The Rocky Mountain News recently ran the following article (click on link above to view) on how to tell what your favorite kind of fragrance is. I've put in my plant suggestions for each type of fragrance in italics.

"What is your 'fragrance personality'? Deep inside our psyches lurks a "fragrance personality," at least according to Perfumania. The beauty retailer aims to explain why some people are drawn to floral perfumes while their closest friends and relatives prefer fruity scents:

  • Those who enjoy classical music, country vacations and pink are best suited to floral scents because they're usually the most feminine. Floral scents. Got that?
  • Fans of R&B music, lakeside resorts and the color green probably favor crisp "green" scents made from natural oils found in the leaves and stems of plants. Herbs: basil, mint, tarragon, cilantro, etc. Very easy to grow.
  • Those who enjoy rock 'n' roll, spa treatments and yellow probably like fruity scents, especially as a daytime fragrance. ‘Lemon Zest’ rose, ‘Othello’ rose, scented geraniums, lemon mint, pineapple mint, apple mint, annual chamomile (smells like apples), iris.
  • Sushi lovers, beach bums and those who favor blue usually gravitate toward ocean scents that are simultaneously warm, salty and fresh. Rosemary, lavender, pines. Or just sniff some kelp meal while putting it on your plants.
  • Jet-setters fond of spicy food and red satin sheets might find a fragrance match in woody scents that conjure up images of bark and moss. Santolina, sage, Russian sage, thyme, hybrid rugosa roses (spicy scent).
  • Those who enjoy jazz, exotic island getaways and purple typically favor oriental scents that are sexy and intense with hints of musk, vanilla and heavy flowers. ‘Rose de Rescht’ rose, other old garden roses, ‘Papa Meilland’ rose, ‘Evelyn’ rose, ‘Scentimental’ rose, ‘Ballerina’ hybrid musk rose, honeysuckle, lilac, flowering crabapple trees, Scotch broom, linden trees."
